Ethno-racial categories are composed of many groups. That is why the Latino community has been described as heterogeneous. Yet, the Latino identity operates socially in a cohesive manner in the US because of internal and external factors. The internal factors are historical in the sense that people in Latin America have a common language that, in spite of national and regional differences, allows for the sharing of cultural goods, ideas and worldviews. They share this cultural heritage because they share a common history of colonization by Spain. Colonization and fights for independence, along with a complicated relationship with the US that has always perceived the western hemisphere as its zone of influence, have brought a sense of commonality in many Latin American countries.
